Betty Boop Mini-Bio
Yes, it's true - Betty began her career as a dog! Betty Boop made her debut as a sexy canine cabaret singer in the Max Fleischer short "Dizzy Dishes" on Aug. 8, 1930. By 1932 Boop had evolved, and her floppy dog ears had become Betty's earrings. Betty's beginings were quite risque and ahead of her time. In 1933 the short "Boilesque" was banned in Philadelphia for being too risque. By 1934, due to moralist pressure, Betty began showing far less leg. The Boop series ended with the release of "Yip Yip Yippy" in 1939.

I Love Lucy
I Love Lucy, a CBS television sitcom that aired in the 1950s, was the most popular American sitcom of its generation and is still considered by viewers and experts alike to be one of the greatest television series of all time.

The series starred movie actress and radio comedienne Lucille Ball, her actor/orchestra leader husband Desi Arnaz, stage actress Vivian Vance and movie character actor William Frawley. The series ran from October 15,1951 to May 6,1957 on CBS (180 episodes, including the "lost" Christmas episode). This show was ranked #2 on TV Guide's top 50 greatest shows of all time in 2002, behind Seinfeld and ahead of The Honeymooners. Episodes of "I Love Lucy" are still syndicated on television in dozens of languages across the world. The show was heavily based on a radio show from a few years before, My Favorite Husband about Liz and George Cooper and many of the scripts were rewritten for I Love Lucy using the same writers Madelyn Pugh and Bob Carroll, Jr.). On this radio show, Lucy had played "Liz" and actor Richard Denning had played "George".
The program was originally sponsored by cigarette manufacturer Philip Morris, and Lucy and Ricky (as well as Ethel) dutifully puffed away in the early episodes. The program originally opened with animated match-stick figures of Lucy and Ricky climbing down a packet of Philip Morris cigarettes. It was only when the series went into reruns that the familiar "heart on satin" with "I Love Lucy" on it appeared.

HISTORY OF THESE PONIES.... 2000 - 2001

The fundraiser began in the year 2000 and was so successful a new "herd" of polyurethane "gitty ups" were produced the following year. The New Mexico governor, Gary E. Johnson, mentioned his enthusiasim of having his state be host to such a totally new and different way of raising money. It brought the arts and business together as the area companies sponsored an artist and thier horse. It was a truly New Mexico project as the sculptor who created the original design is from Santa Fe. The company that cast the figures in polyurethane is in Albuquerque and the artists who transformed the horses into fabulous works of art were from all over the state.

Star Liana York created two models of the horse form: one was standing and the other was running. Artists measured their skills, philosophy of life, symbols, imagery, and explored their connection with a basic equine who over the years of history has symbolized freedom, multi-cultural expressions, human emotions, spirit of women, earth - fire and water as well as peace. The list of effective imagery is hard to record you really need to see them.

The results were magnificent. The artists incorporated themes of memorium, mythical images, the ancestral horse, futuristic, and all facets of life. These magnificent horses are placed in many locations throughout New Mexico. In history the "Painted Pony" meant the "war horse" of the Native Americans and many of the New Mexican artists incorporated those themes, one being the "War Pony" designed by Rance Hood. As stated in the official book, The Trail of the Painted Ponies TM," This startlingly realistic recreation of a Comanche war pony reflects the vibrancy of mystical quality of the horses that populate this popular artist's paintings."

These numbered collectible horse statues are an artistic collection which originated with the Trail of the Painted Ponies in New Mexico. Similar to the Cow Parade in Chicago, these animals of choice are on display throughout the city and also will be traveling the country. For 2 years, individual horses were adopted by well known artists, and some by unknown artists. Companies sponsored their favorites and it made for a very successful fundraiser.

JD Challenger

JD Challenger was born in Oklahoma with a creative fire that first began to smolder when he was a very young child. After moving to Taos, New Mexico, Challenger enjoyed success as an artist painting landscapes. Privately, he continued to draw and paint as he was learning about Native Americans. He was reluctant to show his paintings in public for fear of offending a people he greatly admired. Working in oils and acrylics on canvas, as well as watercolor, his style continued to emerge and his passion grew.

Upon witnessing a Ghost Dance ceremony being filmed for a movie, Challenger came face to face with his mission in life. ''As I stood there watching the chanting and the dancing, I knew what I wanted to paint... nothing had ever been clearer.'' His wife, Denise, encouraged him to show his work to his Native American friends, one of whom was a holy man. When he did so, he received their blessing and was told, ''There has to be a messenger and he doesn't have to be one of our People. The Creator chooses His own messengers. Your path is to tell our story and educate people about the past and about what is still happening today.'' Challenger takes his role seriously, but modestly declines credit for his remarkable gifts. ''The thing I do best is paint. I prefer to look at it as 'not me' doing it, I'm just the instrument... The Creator, the brush, the paint, and then me.''

JD Challenger paints the story of a people rich in heritage and traditions; stories sometimes poignant, often angry... but always powerful and demanding to be told. Each portrait speaks its own truth. Challenger is the vessel that paints that truth.
